TeV γ - Ray Observations of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on observations of the Perseus cluster of galaxies using the 10 m Whipple γ-ray telescope during the 2004-2005 observing season. We apply a two dimensional analysis technique to allow us to scrutinize the cluster for TeV emission. In this contribution we will first calculate flux upper limits on TeV γ-ray sources within the cluster. Second, we derive an upper limit on the extended cluster emission. We then compare the flux upper limits with the EGRET upper limit at 100 MeV and theoretical models.

Galaxy clusters might be sources of TeV gamma rays emitted by high-energy protons and electrons accelerated by large scale structure formation shocks, galactic winds, or active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, gamma rays may be produced in dark matter particle annihilation processes at the cluster cores. We report on observations of the galaxy clusters Perseus and Abell 2029 using the 10 m Whipple...
متن کاملObservation Of The Perseus Cluster Of Galaxies With The MAGIC Gamma-Ray Telescope
The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hours during November and December 2008. No significant γ-ray excess was detected. The resulting upper limits on the γ-ray emission above 100 GeV are 4.63 and 6.55 × 10−12cm−2 s−1 for spectral indices of −1.5 and −2.2, respectively. The obtained limits constrain the emission produced by c...
متن کاملConstraining Cosmic Rays and Magnetic Fields in the Perseus Galaxy Cluster with TeV observations by the MAGIC telescopes
Galaxy clusters are being assembled today in the most energetic phase of hierarchical structure formation which manifests itself in powerful shocks that contribute to a substantial energy density of cosmic rays (CRs). Hence, clusters are expected to be luminous gamma-ray emitters since they also act as energy reservoirs for additional CR sources, such as active galactic nuclei and supernova-dri...
متن کاملEstimating galaxy cluster magnetic fields by the classical and hadronic minimum energy criterion
We wish to estimate magnetic field strengths of radio emitting galaxy clusters by minimising the non-thermal energy density contained in cosmic ray electrons (CRe), protons (CRp), and magnetic fields. The classical minimum energy estimate can be constructed independently of the origin of the radio synchrotron emitting CRe yielding thus an absolute minimum of the non-thermal energy density. Prov...

The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hours during November and December 2008. The resulting upper limits on the γ-ray emission above 100 GeV are in the range of 4.6 to 7.5× 10cm s for spectral indices from −1.5 to −2.5; thereby constraining the emission produced by cosmic rays, dark matter annihilations, and the central radi...
